Programs to support faculty in terms of their knowledge and understandingIn 2009, UND established the Military Affairs Committee, which is comprised of current active duty military members, national guard members, civilian employees associated with the military, veterans from multiple services branches, as well as key UND staff members involved in military issues, to provide effective support and to better serve the integration needs of service members and veterans—both inside and outside of the classroom.
In addition, a large, cross-campus, collaborative project, the Deployment Research Initiative, is working to identify the particular barriers and supports that service members and veterans encounter in the transition from deployment to college, including transition challenges, the impact of experiencing multiple losses, the differences in teaching strategies between the military and UND, the unique set of stressors not experienced or understood by civilians, and relationship concerns.
Military students called to active service return without penalty policyStudents returning from active duty will be given priority registration times, which allows them to register for classes at the earliest time possible and before most other UND students. Returning service members who missed the priority registration period will be able to register any time after their readmission application is processed. Advisors will work with students in setting up schedules and getting into courses that may be full.
In addition, returning service members will not be charged late fees for their first semester back at UND.
