Programs to support faculty in terms of their knowledge and understandingNew in 2011-12, UAA created the Office of Military and Veteran Community Services and reallocated resources to staff the office. The Military & Veteran Community Services Coordinator offers a training program for faculty and staff known as Seawolf Boot Camp. This training has already raised awareness of the military and veteran student experience for over 100 members of the UAA staff and faculty. UAA's 2012 Student Affairs Conference will emphasize the ways in which each member of the staff and faculty are able to improve the way our university as a whole interacts with this student population. Programs are also offered through the Center for Faculty Excellence as well as the annual Staff Development Day to provide faculty with needed information. Additionally, UAA Military Programs serves as a resource for information.
Military students called to active service return without penalty policyStudents called to active duty are provided a 100% refund of tuition and fees if they leave school before the end of the semester. Returning members are not required to reapply for admission and are considered residents for tuition and fee purposes.
Policy concerning students who are involuntarily activated for military serviceStudents called to active duty or involuntarily activated, deployed or
relocated during an academic term may be able to make arrangements
with their faculty members to complete their courses via e-learning.In those cases where this is not possible or desirable, these students
are eligible for 100 percent refund of tuition and fees, and a prorated
adjustment on housing and meal plans. Returning military students
are not required to reapply for admission and are welcomed back as
in-state residents for tuition purposes. Military students who return
after their admitted catalog expires should meet with an academic
advisor for assistance.
Why this school is an excellent choice for military membersThe University of Alaska Anchorage has served the Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base communities for over 50 years, providing military friendly education in the classroom and via distance delivery. With over 1,800 military and veteran students attending UAA, our students experience first hand the benefits of peer to peer counseling and the comfort of sharing their university experience with fellow veterans. Day classes, as well as evening and weekend classes are available. The largest university in Alaska, UAA offers resident tuition to all personnel stationed in Alaska and their dependents. In addition to serving a large veteran population, several UAA faculty, staff and administrators are retired or military veterans; this provides an insider’s view of many of the issues unique to military personnel and their families.
