Letters of Recommendation

Schools use letters of recommendation to learn more about you through individuals (e.g. teachers, supervisors, colleagues, commanders, department heads, squad leaders, division officers, coaches) who know you well. You should ascertain whether the person you selected would be able to write you a strong letter of recommendation. He/she should have spent time with you and be able to comment favorably on your academics, work and character.

  • Select and contact potential recommenders early so that they have adequate time
  • Prompt your letter writers with points you would like them to address.
  • Provide letter writers with the necessary background, forms and instructions.
  • Provide deadlines for each program.
  • Follow up to ensure that letters were mailed or submitted electronically.
