What Is It?
The Tuition Assistance Top-Up benefit is an amendment to the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty education program that pays the difference between the cost of a college course and the amount of Tuition Assistance paid by the military for the course.
Who Does It Benefit?
The Top-Up program is for military personnel who are participating in the MGIB-Active Duty education program and using Tuition Assistance provided by the military. Participants must have served at least two full years on active duty.
How Much Does It Pay?
If the cost of a course is more than the amount a service department will pay, a service member eligible for MGIB can elect to receive MGIB benefits for all or a part of the remaining expenses. The amount paid by the military combined with the amount paid by VA cannot be more than the total cost of the course. Those who receive Top-Up benefits will have their regular MGIB benefits reduced. Top-up is limited to 36 months of payments. For details of the Top-Up program, visit www.gibill.va.gov/pamphlets/tatu.htm
